Men are almost 40 per cent more likely to die from cancer than women, a report reveals today.
They are also around 70 per cent more likely to be killed by cancers that affect both sexes, such as stomach, bowel and liver cancer, researchers say.
The findings shocked scientists who expected both sexes to be at equal risk of cancer.
Risk: Men who more likely to die from the same cancers that affect women
The authors of the study say men are more reluctant to complain to GPs about symptoms and often leave it too late for the disease to be treated.
Men are also less willing than women to switch to healthy lifestyles, despite obesity and smoking being the two biggest causes of cancer.
Author Professor David Forman says it is unlikely that male bodies are more vulnerable to cancer.
‘For many of the types of cancer we looked at that affect both sexes, there’s no known biological reason why men should be at a greater risk than women, so we were surprised to see such consistent differences,’ he says.
‘After taking out the effect of age, men were significantly more likely than women to die from every one of the specific types of cancer considered and, apart from melanoma, they were also significantly more likely to develop the disease.’
